Sulphur Black

Now showing in:

from Humboldt to Humboldt Exhibition

Morris Graves Museum of Art, Humboldt County, California

17th Jan - 1st Mar 2026

This experimental book form is bound with the chemical structure of Sulphur Black dye. Currently, synthetic Sulphur Black is one of the most widely used dyes globally.

Its production and usage in contemporary contexts resonates with Alexander Humboldt’s ecological and humanitarian concerns and observations on industrial indigo production in South America in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

With early modern globalisation and colonisation indigo became one of the most widely used dyes in the world in the 18th century. In his research and writings Humboldt observed the extensive environmental and humanitarian issues that were created in the region by colonisers’ longterm intensification of indigo production for European use.
